Game Information

Rhode Island offers players the chance to play Powerball and Mega Millions as well as the regional Lucky for Life game, which is also played in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont.

Wild Money is a progressive jackpot game, meaning that the top prize rolls over until someone wins the big one! The jackpot starts at $20,000 and reached an all-time high of $601,206 in March 2006. Games cost just $1 per line and each play slip contains five boards, so you can play as many lines as you like. Simply choose five numbers between 1 and 35 and use the remaining 30 numbers on each board to select an Extra Ball. Drawings are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:29 PM and ticket sales close just five minutes prior. Here’s an idea of what you could win:

Numbers Matched Prize Won
5 Numbers Jackpot
4 Numbers and Extra Ball $1,500
4 Numbers $200
3 Numbers and Extra Ball $50
3 Numbers $5
2 Numbers and Extra Ball $5
Odds of winning Wild Money top prize: 1 in 325,000

Numbers is a nice little lottery game that gives players the opportunity to win cash every day of the week. Drawings take place at 1:30 PM seven days a week, at 6:59 PM Monday through Saturday and at 6:29 PM on Sundays. If you want to play, you choose an amount to wager on whether or not the numbers you choose (from 0 to 9) will be drawn in a certain order. Here’s a quick table on how it all works:

Rhode Island Lottery players also have the unique opportunity to play Video Lottery games at casinos in Lincoln and Newport. These interactive machines let players take part in thrilling slots games that can provide rather tasty jackpots.

Other Rhode Island Lottery games include Keno and Bingo as well as Pull Tab Games, which provide charities with vital fundraising opportunities and players with the chance to win a nice cash prize.

Instant games are great for those who need a bit of instant gratification. First introduced to the Rhode Island Lottery in 1976, they remain a popular choice among lottery fans young and old. Tickets cost between $1 and $20 and players can win up to $1 million in cash prizes.

Claiming Prizes

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there have been some changes in the way you claim prizes in Rhode Island. You can find updates on our dedicated Coronavirus Lottery Updates page.

If you’ve won a Rhode Island Lottery prize and want to go out and spend a chunk of it on saltwater taffy and quahogs, then you’ll need to redeem or claim it within one year of the drawing date.

All prizes may now be redeemed by mail; see below. Prizes worth $599 or less can also be claimed at any authorized Rhode Island Lottery retailer, while prizes worth more than this amount may be claimed at the Lottery’s headquarters in Cranston. Don’t worry – it won’t be a particularly long drive!

Don’t forget that you’ll have to pay federal taxes of 25 percent and state taxes of 5.99 percent on all prizes worth more than $5,000. Anyone who wins a prize worth $599 or more will have to complete a W-2 tax form.

Do you have questions about claiming a prize? Call the lottery at 1-401-463-6500.

History of the Rhode Island Lottery

Rhode Island is a little state with a big love for lottery games going all the way back to 1744, when the first lottery game was played. Funds raised in the drawing were allocated for the construction of a bridge on Weybosset Street in Providence.

The Rhode Island Lottery as it is known today was created on November 1st, 1973 after an amendment of the state’s Constitution. Lottery officials got the green light to start operating in March 1974 and the first drawing took place on May 30th, 1974. Tickets cost just 50 cents and the top prize was a respectable $50,000.

Today, the Rhode Island Lottery is a great source of revenue for the state, with funds raised through ticket sales being allocated to educational initiatives, public safety, transportation, government services and the preservation of natural resources. Over $379 million was transferred to the state’s General Fund in the 2013 fiscal year. The whole state wins when residents play Rhode Island Lottery games!
